A real Doh moment

I have always wanted to have some tool storage using pegboard mounted on the wall - there are just some tools that are best hung from a board. What put me off was that, unless you have tool shadows to show you where the tool goes (and as a visual hint of what tool is missing), I find it difficult to keep putting things up on the wall and the board just falls into disuse or disarray or both.

Making tool shadows traditionally meant painting in the outline of the tool. I've tried it in several ways and the result was never satisying.

Now a break through moment - coloured contact (you know the stuff that kids cover book with). I was in Penfolds (stationers) and there it was just when I was thinking about the problem. So a roll of dark blue opaque was bought. Tool outlines were traced around the edge of the tool on the backing paper and cut out (perfect activity for 4 and 6 year olds or for Dads watching the cricket). Then, after the spot for the tool on the board has been determined - peel off the backing and up goes an instant shadow!

So simple and quick.

Never forget when i managed the farm at Ballan, i asked my 6 year old daughter to write the numbers on all the cattle eartags -

The QC/Lawyer and the Accountant (farm owners) thought it was amusing that all the calves had the no. 7 back to front. (how do i turn it around on the puter) but they were neat

What a great idea , only trouble is if i walked in there without my glasses on i would probably be grasping at shadows but thats a another story .

Jeremy, I noticed you use screws like I do instead of those bent wire thingies that are made for pegboard. I've got a jar full of them somewhere that I took off the board 'cos they always fall out. Has anyone had any success with them?

I've done that before and it works fine. But there are 3 advantages to solid shadows of contact (actually 1 for shadows rather than outlines and 2 for contact specifically):

1. shadows provide a much better contrast compared to an outline - makes it that much easier to see what is missing (esp if you use black, dark blue or red for the shadow) - important for those of us who are short-sighted and lose our glasses (maybe I need to put a blue contact shadow for them on my face?)
2. contact can be moved around (or at least removed) more easily if you want to rearrange the board - it is not perfect, but it is easier than marker or paint!
3. contact still provides more activity for the munchkins - they can sit on the floor and trace and cut, but they can't reach the peg board! And you can do it yourself it you want watching TV (no dear I'm not just watching TV.....)

These are marginal, I admit, but they work for me..

I do use the double hanger hooks for the mallets - they don't seem to fall out easily, but the standard bent-wire hooks are so useless that they could replace tits on a bull as a common expression of WOFTAM.

Also, I always tend to have (or am happy to buy) screws, but pegboard hooks are rarely top of mind when I am at the hardware shop.

Because the wall is brick, so screws means wall plugging
Because the pegboard was already hanging there from the previous owner of thehouse
and because pegboard allows easy relocation of the screws when and if needed.
