    Default Low lustre oil finish

    Hi,

Looking to finish a box in a low lustre finish.

Was sure I have seen a buffed/(polished?) finish for timber but as I am new to this I cannot remeber what is was. Is finished the timber with a sort of semi gloss finish and I though it was an oil.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi George,

Tung oil or Danish oil will give you a satin finish. If you wanted a smoother finish you could sand between coats with say, 400 grit.

    Yep.

Organoil DO if it's still around will give you an easy to do flat finish. You can lift the lustre with wet sanding the first coat and/or buffing the final coat and/or adding a buffed wax topcoat.

Rustins DO will have you a medium lustre finish that's a bit quicker to accomplish than Organoil's and it has a nice balance of penetration and shine.
    Cheers, Ern

I finish all my stuff with oils-currently using Organoil and have used for a fair while. I apply liberally with a brush, leave for a few minutes then sand (2400 wet/dry) wet. As the sanding starts to clog apply oil to the sandpaper not the job. When your happy with the look wipe over with a soft cloth. Jobs done. Leaves a low sheen lustre but brings out the 'depth' of the grain. Sometimes if I want a brighter finish from there I'll apply a wax. I have also used the Orange Oil products to similar effect.
