Oak veneer...
Hi all,
I am looking at doing an upgrade to our current staircase. On lower level there is currently solid oak t/g flooring stuck down with bostik ultraset. On the stairs and upper level is currently carpet.
What i have in mind is as follows: rip up old carpet on stairs and landing area to bedrooms doors (landing about 6 m squared). I will defiantly be laying the same timber as down stairs on the top, but its the stairs where i get stuck.
My ideas for here are, some sort of oak veneer. Something that is about 20mm (max) thick and 250mm deep x whatever my stairs are wide. Something that i can then route a bullnose on for the tread. and also use as a riser. The floor is a nice light oak (similar to tasmanian, but i think it might be russian or chinese). So i need whatever i get to match. Is such a product available for a reasonable price?
The next option is to use the t/g flooring on the stairs. Sheet it with plywood and lay with nail and glue. Im not so keen on this method as it will be very fiddly and i think the stairs might look a little crowded with all the joins etc. I also dont like the idea of using the t/g on the riser.
So the third option would be to use the t/g as the tread and have a white riser (using some sort of alternative timber, i'd assume ply or MDF would be the best options)
Has anyone ever had a go at stairs with t/g, if so i'd love to see some detailed pictures.
James
