Default What finish on ironbark/blackwood ???

    Hi everyone,

cool site!!! I am currently working on a ironbark dining table and a blackwood bathroom vanity, i am wondering if i could get some peoples opinions on what finish to use on them, i have used oils (tung and others) in the past and lacquers.

ps. not looking at using a stain this time around.

    thanks.

My preference is Pre Cat Laquer in a low/medium gloss level sprayed on.

I pore filled with timbermate on this clock as well.

Easy to spray , isnt too fussy re dust and repairable.

In both cases, poly is your best bet.

Pre-cat laquer is easy to apply but does not deal with heat or moisture well, oils are worse for dealing with moisture but can take heat better.

On Blackwood I reckon nothing enhances the colour like a good Tung Oil.

However, for hard-wearing surfaces that'll see heat & moisture - dining tables & bathroom vanities are prime examples - a PolyU is the best finish overall.

(A headache to repair, but should take a looong time before it needs that sort of attention.)
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Since polys can be applied so many ways it's best to choose the one that suits your finishing style.
