Tree identification and uses for it

Can anyone help me identify this tree? The old man suggested elm but I'd like to be 100% sure of what it is and I'm still pretty clueless in this department after literally hours of bashing at Google for confirmation.

The logs are from a fallen branch and besides using them for milling and drying practice I'd like to be able to make something from them...indoor, outdoor, farm, garden, horse, dog stuff...anything really. The heart is way off center but I figure that's not going to kill anyone and might make for some interesting grain in say something like a chopping board (provided it's suitable timber of course)

I'm leaning towards a Poplar going on the second photo. Third says it could be either Poplar or Elm.

Leaves also look like they come from a Poplar, look very much like a Populus nigra (Lombardy Poplar)

Looks like poplar is the popular choice

Found this site while continuing to look: Dendrology at Virginia Tech and got a pretty good match for European White Poplar so I'm pretty sure it's that now.

I'm thinking I won't be able to do much more than some painted toys with this stuff when it's cut but I guess the experience is going to count for a fair bit.
