Hearth Tiling / Renovation
Hi all,
Please see attached pics of the hearth in my daughters room. We would like to tile the hearth and restore the timber fire surround and mantle-piece to be a decorative room feature only.
I'm going to get a tiler in to do the job as I'm not confident and it will be the centre-piece of the room.
I'm seeking advice about what to do with the hearth as it is. From the pictures you can see it is broken at the back and appears to cover a brick box (sub-floor) that has been filled with broken brick pieces. The hearth appears to be slate at the back but looks like concrete at the front. It also dips from front-right to rear-left.
We would like the new tiled hearth to sit somewhat proud of the floor, by about 15-20mm which we'll frame in with timber.
I figure my options are:
a) to break up the hearth and lay a new slab to be tiled on.
b) repair and try to level the slab
c) break it up and replace it with a board of some kind
