    Smile G'Day from Mascot

    Hi all,

Like many others on the forums, I've recently caught the woodie bug. I came across this excellent site so many times during google searches about woodwork that I thought I had to join.

I recently finished my first serious woodwork project, an outdoor L-shaped bench seat.
    http://picasaweb.google.com.au/micklove/Bench#
The bench frame was built with treated pine, the sides clad (not sure if clad is the right word ).. with tongue and groove cedar and the actual seat is just 90x20 merbau.
Initially I had built the bench frame in google sketchup.

My next project is going to be a table to match the bench on my balcony. I have an initial design, google sketchup again, http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehou...ad9b54dcbee8ec

The legs of the table i've based on the following table that I found in a "Better Homes and Gardens" book, http://books.google.com.au/books?id=...over#PPA222,M1 . The book recommends using 100x75 Western Red Cedar, however, at almost $50 a metre, it's a bit out of my price range. My local timber guy has some 90x90 merbau at $35 a metre. If anyone has any thoughts on the type of wood to use, they'd be most appreciated.

The cross on the top of the table is probably too ambitious for a newbie like myself, but I'll give it a go anyway. I was going to use merbau for the dark areas on the top and some slightly lighter coloured wood for the cross itself... any ideas welcome )

Anyway, I hope to be enjoying (and contributing) to this excellent resource in the coming years and I look forward to chatting to you all.

    Best rgds,

    Mick
