You can grab a can from Bunnies, wipe on poly, shake, open, tip onto a lint free cloth and wipe on. Follow the directions on the can. Or I use 2 to 3 coats of Estapol and then cut them back with wet and dry(600-800) with oil and then finish with 0000 steel wool and oil. Super smooth.

Use the oil with the wet and dry and with the steel wool, any realy it's just a lubricant, Sifa have a good furniture oil or you can just use turps. www.sifa.com.au/sifa_timber_range.pdf
