While I was teaching people to drive and being taught myself our instructors taught us to drive with hands at 10 and 2 or 8 and 4 with thumbs placed outside the steering wheel. Their theory was from old days of 4 wheel driving, if the vehicle hit a rut and caused the wheel to spin in your hands, it could cause your thumbs to be broken from the spokes.
