Default G'day from WA -- Washington state in the US

My name is Carolyn and I live in the state of Washington, USA. I spent one career teaching, and another as a manufacturing systems engineer. Now I'm a farmer. My husband is a retired industrial arts teacher. He's worked with wood for years but had done very little turning. I've done the associated grunt jobs -- sanding, finishing, holding, whatever. Three years ago I decided I would buy him a lathe for Christmas. I decided it was the only tool on the face of the earth he didn't own. I was disappointed that he wasn't all that excited about it, so I enrolled him in a woodturning class and decided I'd go along to keep him company. What happened next was not expected. I found that the work was really exciting and I enjoyed it. I've been turning ever since. I'm pretty amateurish, but I'm learning. I've been selling my things on our website.

    Hi Carolyn

    Welcome to the Forum.

You going attract a bit of attention to your self by telling people that you purchased your husband a lathe. You might end up with a few marriage proposals.

Wood turning is highly addictive and it looks like you have been bitten by the bug.

As to marriage proposals -- no thank you. I don't have this one completely trained yet and I've been working on him for 52 years. He's been a great supporter of my turning efforts. I'm a chicken with a chainsaw so he roughs out the blanks for me and for Christmas and birthdays he's been buying me gouges, and sandpaper and other goodies I can use. He's the practical sort. Two years ago he bought me a new riding mower since I do all the lawns, and when we planted the orchard he bought me a finish mower that I can use with my tractor. I do all that mowing too.

The thing that started all this was the fact I couldn't see all that wood going to waste when we had to remove so many trees. When people told me that chestnut was a terrible wood to work with it just made it more of a challenge.

The URL for our website is http://www.ChestnutsOnLine.com . The woodturning can be found on the order page.

    Default Welcome

    Hi Carolyn,

    Welcome to the forum.

You live in a great part of the world, I spent 2.5 years in Seattle.

Enjoy the wood turning, I got into it when I was 10 or so, and would love to get back into it again at some stage when I have more time.

    Cheers Guybob

No such thing as a "terrible wood".
After seeing mesquite in its natural shape I think turning such fine wood into charcoal a terrible waste!

Some very nice bowls you've turned Carolyn...and chestnut is a great looking wood.
Question though...why can't they be sent to a Washington address???
    Cheers,

Default Why we don't ship to Washington

It's my way of protesting Washington's sales tax laws. It used to be that any non-food item we shipped within the state was taxed at 7.8% -- the rate here at our farm. As of last July 1 the state legislature instituted destination-based sales tax which means I have to charge the tax applicable at the address where the item is being shipped. That wouldn't be too bad except that there are 407 individual tax codes within the state and the time required to look them up, apply them, and report to the state just about eliminates any profit on the item. Then add to this the fact that there are numerous errors in the state's data base.
