WOODWORKING QUIZ for 6 OCT 04
Good Evening Friends,
I am planning to build a hay rack for some feeder calves that I bought.
A metal one is cost prohibitive. I plan to build it on two 4" x 6" timbers so I can pull it around when I choose, if I build it square with vertical slats the calves can't get to the hay in the middle.
Can you help me design this rack so all hay will be used?

we usually throw it on the ground and let the calves help themselves

Ralph,
Elevated "V" shape is the go. The hay should fall to the bottom where they can reach it. Failing that; get goats. The bustards will use it all right; to lie on & crap on.

WOODWORKING ANSWER for 6 Oct 04
Good Evening Friends,
Ken you hit the nail right on the head as that is the answer I was looking for.
A fellow contacted me for a bid for 100 of them to be made out of white oak, No time limit.
Thanks for your support.

Ralph
Here in Oz every farmer has a mig or stick welder and downgrade or reject steel is pretty cheap compared to timber except for radiata that is, but you wouldn't use that anyway.
So most would build them out of steel and wouldn't even bother to paint them because nothing rusts here much unless you are on the coast like Journeyman Mick.
