another 'guess the thing'
maybe not a tool, don't really know. This wedge is another thing I dug up that came from my parents shed. it is a light alloy and the tab looks like it's there so the wedge can be removed from somewhere. Anyone seen one of these?

i'll hazard a guess and say some sort of locking device.
i still haven't heard from the museum about the other thingy.

it looks alot like a home made iron cap for a hand plane or a wedge for a wooden plane

hmmm, could be (even if it's not!) but it's not home made, there is a serial number on it.

Looks like a shim for adjusting the angle of something. The slot would allow the shim to be angled about a bolt or rod.

I'm with journeyman mick and say its a shim but you would use two, one on top of the other for parallel height adjustment

Are there ridges on it? (Photos arent clear)
Looks somewhat like the wedges used in the front suspension of some vintage cars...I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

It looks a lot like a camber adjuster for the front end of a car. The old Holdens had adjusters very similar, only they were steel and the slot went right through the thin end, sort of U shaped. The tab on the top was used to hold it with a pair of pliers to put it in or pull it out
If it goes against the grain, it's being rubbed the wrong way!

Thanks everyone. I've looked at a few similar items and I reckon it is a shim, possibly for a car suspension.
