Hi Matt, great place to come if you have questions. Some answers will be very short and others could be very long winded, enjoy.

Welcome Matt. Tell us what your year 12 project is and ask as many questions as you need to - I know the answers will come because that is exactly what this board is about.

Hey mate...its a coffee table/games table. When its a coffee table its a very basic and simplistic shape, but when you lift and flip the table top a chess and backgammon board is built into the underside of the table top. Inside the table top (as the lid lifts up) all the games and pieces are stored in here.

Im thinking i'll probably put a basic website up so that i can show people different things and what i have done on the project etc.

    comments?

Have you chosen the timbers to be used? Will the games boards be inlaid? Are you to create the chess/backgammon pieces? We will be pleased to see any photo's you might post.

The main timber that i am going to be using is Meranti Maple at this stage. Originally i was going to be using Western Red Cedar but due to the costing it downgraded to the Maple which is relatively cheaper. Yes the gameboards are going to be inlaid and for the odd square and spike for the boards, i'll be using a darker/light Maple of pine - not quiet sure yet. At this stage im not sure if i will be hand crafting the pieces. This will depend on time and not to mention my skills with shaping/carving timber - i will most likely out source the pieces. No worries i'll post a link when the photos become available, i havent started building the table yet, but i do have all the sketchs and working drawings.
