    Smile the money pit

    Hi all,

I'm a single mum from Adelaide, with an old house and two teenage boys with better things to do than helping renovate the house. I live on a really large block and have put so many things off for so long I don't know where to start.

I have had a bit of bad luck since just before Christmas - my car got stolen when someone let themselves into the house one night while I was asleep. then the new car got it's roof stomped on by some thug on New Years Eve. Then we had a home invasion about 4 days after while one of my boys was home.

Luckily nobody was hurt in any of this but as you can imagine I am doing everything I can on a shoestring budget to at least boost my security around the house.

I'm getting roller shutters all around this week which will be a big relief, however I thought to myself, - nows the time to do that painting youv'e been putting off.

So I started, 5 days of prep and I at least have the first coat on the front eaves of the house.

Then I started thinking - I'm going to all this trouble to paint the outside and the roof looks like crap - no money left to fix it. I discovered this site by accident but I can see just by reading the thread on roof restoration I'm going to find lots of helpful advise and motivation.

All sounded very insightful and eager to help

Thanks already for all those who have chipped in with some helpful advise - I look forward to reading and asking some more as my journey continues.
Unfortunately it sounds like most of you great tradesmen like in Victoria - I'm yet to have a good look around the site (i'm writing on my lunch break) I'm hoping there is a thread where folks can recomend good honest tradesmen in each state to help sort the wheat from the chaff.
perhaps we could start up a thread with a

Hi there! We get over to Adelaide a bit. Hubby over there at the mo keeping his eye on his Dad in hospital. (He's OK! ) Might be a good time to just think about being on the roof, and wait till Autumn for actually getting up on the roof.

    Welcome to our lovely forum!

Yeah, I saw the presidential swearing in and couldn't believe the hats, gloves, coats and scarves. Adelaide like most of Oz is sea level it Rarely gets that cold here, mind you a 45 degree (celcius) heat wave for severeral days in January or February is not unheard of. thanks for the welcome - as Calm suggested the Reno forums are very interesting, I do love to renovate wooden furniture though - I love to take an old piece of junk and turn it into a 'shabby chic' work of art.

    cheers Rita

Final count of (frozen) people standing out in the mall for the inauguration was in excess of 1.5 million....better them than me. Had a few friends over to watch and have some cold ones in the warmth of our home
