    I look for the pinhole where the compass point was.

    My method uses a set square and a 45 degree square.

    The diagram I drew to explain it is attached.

    Basically you draw two lines that go through the centre of the circle and where they intersect will be the centre of the circle. It is based on the principle that a tangent is at right angles to a radius and radii pass through the centre of circles.
