Ebay question response.

The other day I sent off a question to someone selling something on Ebay asking them the location of the item for pickup (it was pickup only).

The response: "Sorry, no idea".

In the end I did bid on the item, a 200 amp CIG MIG, and "won" it for $275. Instead of sending me the mysterious location, the seller sent this:

"we have just received a phone call from the trading post with an offer of $350, if you want you can offer $360 and we will take yours. Otherwise it will sell to this person unfortunately".

I sent them a response saying that if an item is advertised elsewhere, they should pull out of the deal before the close of bidding on ebay, and not after. Imagine if everyone on Ebay did that? You win something for $100 and they send you an email saying you can have it for $150!

Anyway, I wasn't fussed. They don't sound like great people to deal with, so I told them I was happy to back out. They're out there.

It's still going. I must admit the message I sent to back out of the deal was a bit abstruse or ambivalent. I said:

Hello [person], That's the strangest thing. Hasn't
happened to me before. It seems to me that if the
ebay sale goes through to its conclusion it would
be ethical to sell it to that person. What you've
just done should happen before the end of the
ebay time. But, I accept your decision. You'll
have to go through the process of pretending that
I've paid for it and so on, otherwise Ebay might
spit the dummy. Seeya,

Their response:

yeh my dad only received the call at 5minutes before the auction finished, and forgot about it. If you want to call [phone number] we can organise a time for you to come pick it up, you cna pay on pick up if you want.

My (hopefully final) response:

I think you misunderstand me. I don't want to be
any part of such a deal. You can't do that to
people. I meant I will back off and let you sell
it to the other person. You have to go through
the motions of "pretending" that I paid for it
through Ebay at the price I "won" it, so that
they don't hassle you. I don't thing Ebay would
like what you did.

What's the bet that you get flagged as a non-paying bidder (otherwise they will have to pay ebay commission on 'your' sale).

I would have complained to ebay. Obviously people like that are not worth dealing with anyway. I think you will just have to put it down to a bad experience.

In the end I had to. I didn't want to, but they didn't close the transaction by clicking on the "payment received" tab. The whole transaction has been left open and now I have to go through Ebay to close it. Bummer.
