Quick change or sleeveless sanding drums ?

What do you buy ?.....I'm interested in setting one up and not sure .

do you shrug at the expense and buy quick change drums.

or are you willing to fiddle about trying to load ordinary sandpaper into those cam sleeveless ones. (I an't particularily good at loading these ones tight enough... get little bumbs going on that ????? me at the join)

Cut the paper the right lengh and you'll have smaller bumps, never perfect, at least for me... depend on what your doing i guess.

and when you run out you don't have to do a special order...

It depends on the job. If you are only using the drum to shape the timber then the sleevless ones will do and save a bit of money. If you are using a fence to get a desired thickness then the sleeve ones work better.

ta guys. I've never thicknessed timber with one before off a fence. Only ever shaped with it.

I use it to thickness thin laminations for the limbs of archery bows. Some about 2-3mm some with a taper so too thin to plane. The sleves are far better for this sort of thing.
