Brazing for bicycle frames
hi all,
i want to learn the basics of metalwork and brazing so that I can try building my own bike frame. I have a fair bit of experience in bike mechanics, but my metalwork experience is limited to high school. What I'm after is how to join a lugged steel frame using silver, bronze or nickel brazing.
I live in Sydney and was looking at a community college courses or TAFE course, but many of them focus on welding — and while I would like to learn that as well, I don't know what's the best course of study. Does anyone have any suggestions for courses?
thanks in advance …
Patrick

Brazing for bicycle frames
Try the Welding Forum as they may be able to answer your questions better.
Contact TAFE and ask where there are cources on Panel Beating as they cover Brazing as well as a suggestion.
Regards,
Keith.

These competency units cover brazing & silver soldering.
AURV281208A Carry out brazing procedures - Unit Guide available
MEM05006B Perform brazing and/or silver soldering - Unit Guide available
MEM5.6AA Perform brazing and/or silver soldering - Unit Guide available
Check with the closest TAFE college that has Panel bashing (as Keith said) or welding.
Thes units will be part of a course. Not sure if you can do any of them as a stand alone. It would be an expensive way to do it anyway as you would still have to enroll for a minimum of 1 semester(1/2 year) My suggestion is you enquire about both welding and panel beating to find out what other units are in the course and then decide which others would be of most use to you.
You might even find a college that delivers some of the units as flexible delivery, though being a largely "hands on" subject I doubt if flex del would be available.
I'm not sure what is being offered in welding these days but a basic welding course might be most suited to you. Something with these competency units maybe.
AUR23608A Carry out welding, soldering, thermal cutting and thermal heating procedures - Delivery of this Unit of Competency is via enrolment in a module/s
AUR23708A Carry out welding, thermal cutting and heating procedures - Delivery of this Unit of Competency is via enrolment in a module/s
You would still have to enrol and you can't do that now until next year. Be aware that due to demand some courses are by application so it would be a good idea to get all the info sometime soon, so if you do have to apply, you don't leave it too late.
Hope this helps

Thanks for your help Keith and Bollie — I'll look into your suggestions and get some information for the next available semester.

Patrick,
just wondering how you will source/make your lugs? If you haven't worked this out yet you might be better off learning how to Tig weld and doing away with the lugs.

Hi Mick, thanks for the suggestion but I quite like the look and feel of a decent lugged frame, so I would prefer to stick to that method. Also, I have heard that as a beginner, it's much easier to achieve acceptable results when brazing a lugged frame than welding, not sure if that's true. There's quite a few places in the UK and the US that provide lugs and tubing for framebuilding — many of them will post to Oz. Ceeway mentioned above will provide a whole kit of tubes, lugs, bottom bracket and dropouts. If you're interested there's a few resources for framebuilding on my delicious page at http://delicious.com/hemingway44/framebuilding

Patrick,
you heard right, it will be uch easier to master brazing into a lug rather than shaping an angled junction and tig welding it. I had no idea you could buy lugs etc, never really flet the need to look into building a bike, I've got too many interests as it is and barely get time to ride the bikes I do own.
