    Default New Pergola

    Hey guys

The missus is pushing me to builder her an open air (no roof ) pergola to grow some grapes over.

This would join to the existing pergola. She wants it 7M by 6M with no supports in the middle. Now I know that is a damn long span, but as there is no roof three 150X50 3.0mm gal hunks of steel (three – one on ether end and one in the middle) then running a 40X40 2.5mm diagonally every 1 meter for the vines to grow..

Do you think the 150X50 will support that span?

I have attached a rough diagram to explain

    cheers

I think it would support it...You will need diagonal bracing at either end to give it stability..I wouldn't use 40X40 for the cross bits but would use 25X25 or even 16mm rod..

Other alternatives for you is to use purlin material in either Z or C section...

make a few basic real-life checks. A thriving vine in full leaf that gets suddenly soaked in heavy rain could weigh a substantial amount. At least get an idea of how strong such a span would need to be to support the basic sheet roof. That would at least give you a starting-point. Is half that strength OK, or 1/4?

    Just my 2cents worth.
