I reckon Australia Post is one of the best value services we have...reliable, fast & not very expensive.

I agree; but why does it still take Aust.Post two to three days to move a letter 400 Km from Mildura to Adelaide. Last time I looked, this is 2008, not 1908!!

So why is it that Australia Post charges almost double as much to send a letter to the US as US Post does to send one to Australia?

You should have a look at the difference in parcel rates, some of the US parcel rates to Oz are cheaper than Melbourne to Sydney!

You soon find that out when you go in a pen swap and want to send some blanks to the US, or when you buy things over there, it is very cheap on postage.

Possibly for the same reasons as this occurs

Letter from Maryborough Qld to Bundaberg Qld. Road distance 117 km, letters take 2-3 days, when asked how come as Bundy "is only just up the road"

Answer - the mail goes to Brisbane first and is distributed from there.

I can comfortably and legally drive it in 1h25, Cadel Evans could ride it on his "pushy" in approx 2h30

But it would cost you more than 55c, and Cadel Evans doesn't work for Aust Post

Same thing happens here, mail goes to Dandenong (about 200k away, then comes back to whereever it has go in Central Vic.

With all that, they don't provide a bad service though, particularly for 50 or 55c.

AP have centralised their mail distribution to reduce their staff overheads and this is why two day deliveries between towns occurs. In bygone days letters and parcels were sorted in local PO's and then either delivered locally or sent to larger centres to be moved about. Now with mechanisation and other factors the distribution is more centralised and it has resulted in a somewhat slower service but they would deny that of course. You will notice that there were two letter box recievers in PO's in the past, one for local mail but not any more. Eden on the NSW south coast for instance has all its mail taken to Wollongong and then local stuff is returned overnight and this is the same as it always was but in a lot of cases it has resulted in the two day delivery standard in more remote areas. Parcel prices are starting to really sky rocket and if you had AP's fuel bill you would be jacking them up also. AP is no longer a subsidised government dept and as such has a P&L resposibility at the end of the year.

I have no issues with Australia Post other than the total lack of information about this increase. I am not a News junky but I do hear several news bulletins and watch at least one news bulletin daily. The increases only came to my attention via this Bulletin Board

We send quite a few letters out (up to 5 or 6 daily on a quieter day) and as we live almost 30Km from the Post Office we leave our mail in our box to be collected, we could easily have incurred an underpaid fee of $1.50 (up from $1.05).

Shame on you Australia Post for the lack of publicity. How else were we to find out apart from the hard way? I guess your management would suggest that we check your website every day just in case there are changes.

Thanks to wheelinround for alerting us to this sneak price increase.

There is usually a staff bulletin about this sort of stuff, we didn't get it so why should they tell you or anyone else before we get it? They have never been big on telling the world about price increases in the standard letter rate and parcel rates increases are never publicised at all. Me, I just drive for AP so I put up with the same stuff you do. BTW if you think AP's parcel rates are high try getting a parcel out of the UK, a king's ransom springs to mind.

Not Much Faith in A.P. When we moved house,AP kept telling me I had my address wrong.Could I change it.It was causing them trouble (parcels were getting the AP runaround big time)They told me I lived in ****** suburb.Which I didnt. One phonecall I ask the suburb of streets surrounding me.They had them right, but not mine. One parcel was returned to USA.
Marked unable to deliver or something like that.I had to get the council to alter some database that AP use
We received a letter from them telling us how good they were, and we are now in the ***** delivery area.I still have the letter somewhere.

My wife just got back from town. She went to purchase 143 5 cent stamps but could only be sold 20 because they are in short supply.

We will need to drive the 60Km round trip to get the remainder when they are made available.

My wife sent an email to Australia Post a few days ago asking them about the increase. They have not bothered to even respond.

Bugger Australia Post - I think I might just write to my local Federal MP.

The Management of Australia Post have demonstrated that they make blithering idiots look astute. This is an absolutely ridiculous debacle.
