    Question Who stocks abrasive wool?

Is SIA abrasive wool still around? Does anyone know of an on-line source for it, or any shops that stock it? Thanks.

    Hi Woodwould.
SIFA, I get some from Bunnies and sometimes Home hardware depends on the individual shops though I think. Some antique shop/supplies have it also.

Thanks for the response, but I think we're at cross purposes. I'm not looking for steel wool (SIFA in NSW manifacture steel wool which is where I think you picked me up).

The stuff I am looking for is Fibral abrasive wool which is a synthetic steel wool made by SIA in Switzerland. It looks like this:

Do you use it for wood or metalwork Woodwould? Is it like a soft green potscrubber?

You can use Fibral wool for anything you'd use normal steel wool for. I used it in place of steel wool on high tannin timbers and where an antiquing process required the use of chemicals or water-based stains to prevent the steel wool dust reacting and causing little blue-black blotches in the wood.

Fibral is to steel wool what 3M foam-backed pads are to sandpaper. The 'pot scrubber' pads are half way between 3M pads and Fibral. It's a looser, more random mesh than the pot scrubber pads - altogether much more like real steel wool. Similarly, it can be used wet or dry and doesn't break down and disintegrate like steel wool does.

Northern Abrasives in Sydney sell this gear. Also a Festool dealer. Very helpful to deal with.
