    Default Firefox 3 and RealPlayer

There is always a catch to "upgrades" isn't there.

Couple of days upgraded to Firefox 3, now I find my RealPlayer doesn't work with it.

Suppose I have to wait till RealPlayer catches up.

Funny thing is, I can't really see what has changed in Firefox!

Big Shed, have a look at VLC, I think it's PC compatible, it plays everything under the sun and would work with F/Fox 3.
I make things, I just take a long time.

What's your problem with RealPlayer Greg?

Chris, I only use RealPlayer for downloading videos, eg YouTube stuff. When You play a video it pops up a box to allow you to download the video. I use other programs to actually play the videos. Does VLC do that?

I had a lot of nuisance stuff from RealPlayer in the early years and looked around for something to get rid of it. I have settled on VLC as Waldo also recommended; it just works and doesn't try to bury you with ads or other junk 'upgrades', or suggest you can buy the 'full version' twice a week. I avoid RP and Windows media player wherever I can now.

If all you need Real for is downloading the videos, there are several plug-ins for Firefox that do this. I use DownloadHelper. Open the page with the video, click on the DownloadHelper icon, give the file a sensible name and away you go.

VLC works fine as a player, 98% of the time. For those damnable Flash (FLV) files, there's FLVPlayer.

Greg, I haven't once received received ads or suggestion to buy the "full" version.

I had a look a the the DownloadHelper site, sounds interesting, especially the format converter feature.

Fred for downloading stuff I use Azureus, to find the torrents I use http://www.mininova.org/ VLC doesn't download just plays everything under the sun. If a browser is upgraded VLC is upgraded very soon after, without the buy me upgrade me as Groggy pointed out.

Don't know if it still does it. It used to drive me batty and I won't use it again because of it.

Thanks Chris, my opinion of Azureus is not a very good one I'm afraid. I use BitLord for torrent downloads and it is seamless. I also use Mininova, but prefer Demonoid, there is some good stuff there.

The only thing I use RealPlayer for, and it does it very well, is downloading videos such as YouTube ones. I have visited the RealPlayer site and they say they are working on an upgrade fro Firefox 3.

Don't really know why I said yes to the Firefox 3 upgrade, there was nothing that didn't work for me in V2. Usually I go and have a look around before I upgrade any software.
If it does what I need it to do, I stay with the version I have.

My desktop puter is still on Win2000, my notebook is on WinXp only because it came with it.

Usually I take the view "if it ain't broke don't fix it", but must have had a brain fade with Firefox 3, having said that everything else seems to work just fine, and I still think that Firefox is the best browser out.

I did the upgrade because an upgrade to a plugin I was using wasn't backward compatible. I'm not sure 3 is really faster, as was promised, and it wouldn't update on my eeepc because of rev diffs in tcl or something.

I don't like some features of the new 'smart' address bar, I don't particularly want to see some of the rarely used bookmarks showing up as potential matches.

However IMO the re-engineered zoom function is worth the upgrade. Entire pages zoom properly now including images. This is a winner for me.

I upgraded, found the RP plugin didn't work as Big Shed has experienced and promptly went back to the previous version. Mind you the only time I use FF is for video DL.
