Try the Control Panel, and there should be a icon for adding and removing applications.

And no, I am not always your friend either.

Try Start>Control Panel>Programs>Uninstall a Program and then find Google Desktop from the list and click on it, then Uninstall

    Second the 'uninstall' thingie.

I got caught with similar c##p, with applications like Adobe's stuff that won't let you download the update unless you also include a pile of steaming s##t - they even have the temerity to make you click a check box to accept the c##p, it won't download otherwise. At least the uninstall works, it doesn't with a lot of other apps, like Symantec/Norton's

To remove Symantec/Norton, you need to D/Load the Norton Removal Tool, it removes everything. I used it 3 of my computers and it's all gone

    Christopha,
(from one non computer nerd chippie to another) you can just turn it off by right clicking on a blank section of the toolbar area at the top of the screen and deselecting it. That's what I did with Google, Yahoo, AVG security and a few other toolbars that loaded themselves on.

I'm assuming that you are using MS IE.

    Click on "Tools"
Then click on "Manage Add-ons" and "Enable or Disable Add-ons"
Finally you will get a window with all of the Add On scripts that have been attached to or added into your IE. Just highlight the offending script and click to disable.

It is still installed though, needs to be Uninstalled to remove it completely.

Back again.... chippy comp nerd extraordinaire!
Got rid of the bloody Google tool bar thing, many thanks to all.
NOW, the flaming comp is runing slow, like dialup speed!
I have done the 'cleanmgr' thing and defragged too but still she is like stirring mud with a noodle. I am using XP if that matters...

you need to buy , yes I know that bad word where you part with money , a registry cleaner , I use Registry mechanic cost about $50 at hardly normal's and improved the speed dramitacally
Every time you install or unistall it leaves trace files that go nowear and when its running it keeps looking at all that stuff , a registry cleaner remover all thoes unnecessary bits and it goes faster
BTW have you run a spycheck or an ad-aware there can be a heap of that crap in there that slowes you up as well

Chris, I use CCleaner, which is a free download.

Just back from a 5 minute job. MBGitW's best friend rang up at 0930 to say that she has a virus in her computer. What it was, was someone had installed a second anti virus program and it decided to battle the original (AVG). Eventually decided to reinstall Windows (XP) and all that entails . . . 4 hours later I get home.
