I am astounded at the intolerance of some of you. 17 or 70, male or female, white, black, yellow, green or purple, Muslim, Hindu, Christian, atheist or plain bloody heathen, every one has a right to post here provided they follow the rules.

The fact that someone wants to learn about OUR country is gratifying.

We are supposed to be the most racially tolerant people in the world and whilst I agree with some sentiments posted about having to alter things to suit minority groups, it is the law, so be it.

Alot of scepticism going on but I dont know about intolerance.......probably more a reluctance to listen to a young arab woman's perception of our country and some of the issues going on in the world today.

If people in here think Noora's totally off the target with her perception of Australia and the world outside her country then maybe we should do something about it....like sharing OUR perceptions of our own country with her.

On the scepticism issue....I have to admit I was sceptical at first and maybe Noora did give the impression she was interested in woodwork when she first started posting here. Maybe that was the only way she could think of getting a thread going......it was after all the first time she'd participated in a non arab forum.

I suspect by now some people in here think Im a middle aged perv whos gone sex mad because he hasnt seen a woman for 3 weeks and the rest of you probably think Im Al Queda's Australia Press Attache.....might be a good time to sit back for a bit and just watch the postings. Got work to do anyway.

Gumby, I just reread all the posts and you might be right but I am not confused. I was not talking about racial intolerance.

I agree to a point but when I read her email address (since deleted) she lost me completely. From that point on I did not believe she is who she (or he) purports to be. That is definitely not an address that would be used by a respectful 17 middle eastern female.

Australians believe that they are a tolerant society, and (as far as I can tell) this seems to be so. At any rate we're generally easy going. However just because we think we're tolerant and easy going doesn't mean the rest of the world thinks so. Looking at this thread, I started thinking that maybe we're not as tolerant as we think we are, at least this little slice of our greater society. And what do others think of us?
I'm sure most Americans don't think that they are loud, pushy, crass or insensitive, however that's how a lot of the people in the tourist industry around here percieve them to be. In today's global political climate it certainly wouldn't hurt for us as a nation, and as individuals to closely examine our PR image, and where ever possible, to foster more harmonious relationships. We all belong to some group or subgroup: family and friends, local community, internet community, global community.
I'm not always interested in all the forums on this BB, but I choose not to visit those, or, if I do I only lurk (just in case I miss out on some interesting exchange ) If you're interested, join in, if you're not, then don't. If you're sceptical about a person's bona fides then just lurk. Most fakes will trip themselves up and make fools of themselves. Besides a few people pushing their barrows of ware most people have been tolerated, even some rude ones. There's been a few people in the past on this board who've said some pretty silly things about woodworking and machinery but people have tolerated them.
So, why can't this person be tolerated? Because she's younger/female/has poor English skills/doesn't seem to be interested in WW? None of these attributes has prevented others being made welcome in the past. There's been quite a few younger members, there's a few females (I always look forward to Jackiew's posts), Soundman's and Al's spelling (amongst others ) has been criticised but they're still made welcome (not to mention Captain Crabtree ) and there's probably 100s of posts from SilentC, BitingMidge and others that don't pertain to woodworking at all, yet where would we be without them?
And as for scepticism about a person's real identity, well I don't use my real name online and you just have to take my word that I'm a 42 year old carpenter that lives near Cairns. For all you know I might be a smart @rse 4th year apprentice from Chatswood who once visited North Queensland. Would it matter if Noora was not exactly who or what she says she is? I can't recall anyone else's bona fides being questioned before. We pat ourselves on the back and tell ourselves what a wonderfully tolerant society we are but is that the reality that others see or the myth that we believe?

Is tolerance the word, but intolerance the action?
