    Unhappy Purple Heart Problem

    Hello All,
I am building a few pieces from purple heart.
In the past any finish that I have tried to use has turned the
colour from bright purple (which I want to retain)
to a far less impressive reddy/purple.
Am looking for advice as to any finish which will still be
durable, but will not influence the colour of the natural
    timber.
Any information would be much appreciated.
    Thank you
    Trevordog

    Hi Trevordog,

Purpleheart does eventually turn to a lovely dark reddy/purply-tinged brown.

Once freshly cut, exposing to uv light will turn it purple, however, too much light will hasten the purple colour disappearing into brown.

Finishing with a UV-protectant finish might help, but I don't know if this will help it retain the purple permanently.

    cheers
    Wendy

No problems That's one of the bonuses of the forum, that the replies are here ready for you .

What are you building? My only foray with Purple Heart to date has been a photo frame for a friend, oh and a lovely pen Skew made for me.

    cheers

    Hi Wendy,
    again finally here and looking.
Probably will build a coffee table,
may refloor the toilet to match the purple heart toilet seat
    that I have already made.
Have just completed a small stool which I will soon try some UV protectant finish on.
    HAVE FUN

A purple heart toilet seat. Real luxury that is. And not much UV light to worry about.

I have to say this. I hope there will be some visual difference between the toilet seat and the floor so that, well, um.. , you know, mistakes don't happen

Guess you haven't you heard the expression "his mum thinks the sun shines out of his a@$ehole" or "his mum thinks the sun and moon shine out of his a@$ehole"
The UV on a toilet seat could be massive, what with all that extra sunshine in there.

Sorry - Just couldn't help myself.

    Cheers - Neil
