Floor Boards Rejecting Stain
I have just had my spotted gum floor boards sanded and polished, and supposedly stained. The floor man tells me that the timber has rejected the stain. This is especially so around the doors which I can only think of could be due to my cleaning the doors with turps, thinners, metho, nail remover and your general household windex. Could this be the cause of the rejection? If so, how do I go about getting the boards stained to match the old floor boards?

If windex has a bit of silicone in it - that would be possibly your problem.
Best bet would be to try a different type of stain. Feast Watson stains and the base medium are a good option for floors.
Maybe some pics would help us understand whats going on.

It's cool, the problem has been solved. Apparently the floor man didn't even bother to stain the boards, although he told us that he tried to! Whether he forgot to I don't know, but we had another floor man look at it and he says that they haven't been stained at all. So now I've been trying to contact the initial floor man to ask him what the go is, but of course, he won't answer my calls! Just got stiffed $1,750 - bloody lovely!

You should never pay a tradie until you are 100% happy for him to walk away. Most won't come back once the money is in the bank.
Get some pics up and we might be able to advise what to do next.

I'd say Extra's right, you probably won't see this bloke again, now that he has got the dough in his hot little hands.
My question is. What colour does one stain a Spotted Gum floor? I was always under the impression that people paid the big bucks to have a Spotted Gum floor because of it's awesome colouring (along with it's legendary hardness). So, for me, the question begs, would you stain it a light colour or would you try and make it darker??
I'm at a loss.
