    To be honest, I'm not really concerned if I don't get the cut exactly square. I've never had a leak because of an off square cut.

    I use a hacksaw and clean up the cut (remove burrs) when I'm done.

    No tape required. And it won't matter if the cut isn't perfectly square, but it needs to be something like it.

    But surely you would be able to cut a piece of 1" pipe square?????????
    Just make sure you de-burr it otherwise you will tear out the 'O' ring.

    You would hope so wouldn't you! - all done no leaks so I'm happy!. The connectors are quite bulky but work really well.
