    Default clouts in sub-floor

    Hi all,
We are putting in a floating floor over a pine timber sub-floor. Previously there were about 400 clouts holding fibre cement underlay and tiles there. Most of the clouts came up, but there were about 10 which lost their heads as we tried to raise them. I nailed the headless clouts down to make them flush to the pine flooring. I have since been told that these may raise up and push up the floating flooring over time. Is this true? Any suggestions of what to do to minimise this risk, or should we be ok to proceed with the floating floor???
    Much appreciated.

If your worried that they may work back up, get a nail punch and punch them down below the surface of the pine even right through if you use drift punch.

There is evidence that in some situations timbers squeeze out nails over time (especially nailplates) but no one quite knows why and hence exactly what conditions will cause it. The most likely scenario is frequent swelling of timbers will cause it. I would advise DJ's method so that the nail has a lot further to go.
