I have a new concrete floor in a 16 sq.m studio.

I am considering painting/staining the concrete.

Does anyone know if this can be done without polishing the concrete first? That is - is there a cheap D-I-Y method of achieving an acceptable preparation for the painting/staining?

The floor will be largely covered in rugs when complete.
