    Default Durable rather than Flash

My son and I have been in the shed making a cabinet for the dart board he recieved for Christmas. It is Radiata and MDF. SWMBO says it need to hang out side under the back verandah. It will be undercover however out doors and gets some western sun.

Any suggestions on a finish rather than paint?

For Radiata it looks quite nice

    Hi Howdya,

How about some deck finish, eg Sikkens HLS or other appropriate outdoor finish?

    cheers

    Spar varnish.

I use weather resisting finishes on my yacht and so can claim to have had a great deal of experience in using spar varnish and Deks Olje which is an oil finish, I would possibly opt for the oil based finishes. Spar varnish is very flexible, is superior in appearance to oil finishes when properly applied and can cope with wood movement caused by sun and moisture but refinishing can be a little tedious. Deks Olje is extremely good but a bit more expensive, the benefit is it only requires minimum refinishing. If used with the second finish it is as good as varnish in appearance. I have no great experience of decking finishes. As always there is no one wonder finish, each has advantages and disadvantages.

The only thing in the shop yesterday was Cabots Outdoor Furniture Oil.

I guess we'll call it an experiment

I use that on my merbau outdoor chair. It gets a lot of weather and after one lot of coating (3-4 years ago), still hasn't turned completely grey. Gee, must be time to give it another clean/sand/coat though.

    cheers
