Help pls! Choose timber flooring
Hi everyone. Newbie here.
I am renovating my apartment and after few shopping trips to timberyard and various flooring store, I am more confused than ever
1) Is it possible to install solid timber flooring in apartment? Body corporate has given me permission to do so (ie install, sand and polish). One store told me that i should not do that and advised me to buy a prefinished solid timber. It is pretty much few planks of timber joined together by some sort of metal in bottom. Anyone else use? Any good?
2) Roughly how much is the estimated cost per sqm for installing, polish and sanding floorboard
3) Does anyone know a good floor contractor in melbourne
Thanks everyone

G'day, And welcome to the forums.
Try Master Plus in melbourne.
They have 10 stores all over the place.
You can use solid timber flooring. Either fixed via direct stick to the slab or fixed to ply that is fixed to the slab.
Talk to the people at Master Plus regarding cost.
Santo would be the best to talk to.

Three choices
1. cheapest 'Laminate' which is a photo of timber glued in thin laminex to a cheap medium density timber base $25 laid yourself.
2. Real timber floating floors. 4-6mm of real timber laminated to a timber substructure. Starts around $40 - $60 a sq metere laid yourself.
3. Real timber floors - as it sounds - real timber floor boards invisably nailed to particle board. Costs around $100 sq metre plus laying (v. difficult to learn on the go.
Number twqo is the best option, can be sanded later to re-finish the lacquer. It is very hard wearing and looks great.
Option 1 lasts about 5-10 yrs and has to be removed and replaced.
If you got the cash, naturally go number three.
best of luck

Trevor,
Masterplus did a new floor for me in a new extension and demonstrated that they were anything but "masters"! It took them three goes before they threw in the towel and left me with a substandard floor. They left the finish with hundreds of lumps. Also they don't know the difference between cupping and crowning and what causes this!

I'm very surprised at that.
Have you contacted ATFA?
Masterplus is a member and ATFA will investigate and put preassure on them on your behalf if they have not done the right thing.

and ring Dave H.Hooroo.
