Default Stainless steel fixings near pool

    Hi,

Newbie here so please be gentle.

I'm building a deck around a saltwater pool and will be running the boards upto and level with the coping stones. I know I have to use SS screws for the board fastenings, but what should I use to mount the joists to the bearers ? I'm concerned that the normal pryda joist hangers will corrode and fail. Are there such things as SS or enamelled joist hangers ? I thought of mounting the joists on the bearers and using skew nail/screws, but part of the deck is close to the ground and i don't think I have the space.

    Any advice gratefully received.

    Cheers
    Peter

Question What about gal or zinc?

Gal or zinc not good enough for pool areas?

    Doc.
All decks should be stained....black white black white black white.......after all it would match anything!
All roofs should be covered or tiled.....black colorbond, silver mist, black colorbond, silver mist, black colorbond.........after all, we wouldn't want a mismatch!

    Hi,

The data sheets I have from TQ for decks require SS or Monel metal for fixings within 1 metre of the pool surround, so I'd assumed the normal joist hangers were out.

The main data sheet is here..

    http://www.timberqueensland.com.au/application/diy.asp

which just mentions using higher protection for fixings in corrosive environments. The other data sheet I have is TQ TDS 13 - Residential Timber Decks Close To or On The Ground. I picked up a photocopy of this from my local timber merchant. This is the one that specifically mentions SS or monel to be used close to a pool.

    Cheers

    Default Alternative to Joist hangers

Fix a ledger batten to the plate your intending to joist bracket too and do away with the joist hangers

    Joist hanger method

    Ledger batten Method
Use stainless fixings to attach ledger like bugel screws or coach screws

    Thanks Utemad.

Can I do the same sort of thing to mount bearers perpendicular to one of the other pool walls ? I want to keep the run of the deck boards the same all around the pool so I have to mount some bearers at right angles to 2 of the pool walls. I had planned to rest them on a ledger, but I've just noticed the pool filter pipe inlets are going to be a nuisance on one side. If I could mount them in-line like this I'd have plenty of clearance.

    Cheers

That method will work as long as the deck is close to the ground and there is little uplift force.

    Hi Utemad,
Your ledger batten method looks neat, but what did you use to fix the joists and how - I can't see from the picture?
    Cheers,
    Adam
