Perferation for airconditioner
Hi
I have to cut a stud to fit an aircon unit in the wall. whats the best way to sure up the opening, and return structual ridigity to the hole. would 4x2 timber frame be enough or would I have to make a box section steel frame?
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks...Rob...

4x2 should be ok but the top and bottom rails should be fixed to the next stud on each side of the openning

Depends on what is directly over the stud in terms of loading. Treat it as a beam/lintel spanning the distance to the next stud on each side. Also, you should put a second stud in under the cross member so it is directly supported and not relying on the nails/screws only.
