    Default replacing sills on sash windows

    help.

    We have an old weatherboard (1904) with double hung sash windows. two of these windows at the front of the house have rotten window sills on the outside.

    someone has covered them with sheetmetal in the past but they need replaced.

    Can anyone out there thell me how best to do this???

    The window sills are the foundation on which the frames are built.Thus they really cannot be replaced without rebuilding the frames. Chances are that if the sills are rotted you will have problems with the sashes as well. So in short ..... New windows !!!!

    As and apprentice carpenter in the early 60's I must have done dozens.

    We had in those days the benefit of a heck of a lot of stock mouldings for sills etc. Also we had a machine shop where we could easily make up new sections, that is the thing, if you have to buy or pay someone to make your sections then maybe Tool-Horder is right.

    Never came across one that needed supporting in place once the sill was removed, they just held themselves up.

    Usually we cut the last few inches off the jambs as well as they were rotten too. Cut out the old stuff with beveled cuts that angle down from the inside to the outside, both ways, so the new is weathered. (that is the water runs off the joint not into it.

    Use oil base paint (we used red lead primer) and putty to make the joints.

    I have a small page about repairing doors the same way, not got round to windows yet.

    I think I'll pull the windows out and have a crack at trying to repair them
