Every hour, every day I'm learning more
The more I learn the less I know about before
The less I know the more I want too look around
Digging deeper for clues on higher ground.

Hi
As and apprentice carpenter in the early 60's I must have done dozens.
We had in those days the benefit of a heck of a lot of stock mouldings for sills etc. Also we had a machine shop where we could easily make up new sections, that is the thing, if you have to buy or pay someone to make your sections then maybe Tool-Horder is right.
Never came across one that needed supporting in place once the sill was removed, they just held themselves up.
Usually we cut the last few inches off the jambs as well as they were rotten too. Cut out the old stuff with beveled cuts that angle down from the inside to the outside, both ways, so the new is weathered. (that is the water runs off the joint not into it.
Use oil base paint (we used red lead primer) and putty to make the joints.
I have a small page about repairing doors the same way, not got round to windows yet.
