I am renovating a 70s house which has typical "orange" stained varnished woodwork everywhere including 30 identical doors on cupboards and between rooms as well as on skirting & door facings.

I intend to paint all the exposed wood in a mid-sheen white to brighten the place up (but not dazzle!).

While I am happy to paint the frames and skirting by hand, I am concerned at getting a good finish on the doors if painting them by hand as they have a "tick" in the grain. This might be hard to remove/smooth with conventional undercoat/rubbing down so I wondered if it would be better to get them sprayed with twin coat Polyurethane?
