Default Heritage Home? Rules of renovation. Help please.

    Gudday all,

I am taking some time off work and helping a mate on a house that he has recently bought. It is livable bt needs a few things done including outdoor landscaping etc.

    The house is ~1860's.

    Questions.

How do we find out whether it is heritage listed?
What are the rules on what can/can't be done?
Who is the authority on what can be done?

Does anyone know of tradies in Victoria who specialise in period stuff (they want built in wardrobes but they need to look part of it not add on).

    Any advice welcome.

    Cheers
    Nashy

Shannon I googled " heritage listed victoria" and the links there seamed to cover it all

When I was doing a couple of places up in Sydney I got a book " How to restore the OLD AUSSIE HOUSE " by Ian Stapleton from The Flannel Flower Press
I found it terrific as it coveres just about all you need to restore a place over a wide time range

If it wasn't sold as heritage listed then it isn't.
Be very sure you want maintain the heritage standard before you start asking too many questions. It's great to restore a house to it's former glory but the heritage restrictions can be fairly difficult and expensive to work with.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

once you are heratige listed you even need permission to paint and what colour to use .
I did assume that you wouldn't be listed as it would have been picked up when you bought the place

I think you will find it all here
    http://www.dse.vic.gov.au/planningsc...urne/home.html
(click on the map image on the left and you can look up any address)
and/or ask the council or look on the council web site.
