    Question Patina Cupboard Finish

My wife wants a hand painted kitchen (cupboards) does anyone now how to do a petina finish as she wants the cupboard doors to look old and a bit grubby. Any assitance would be appreciatted as we have tried staining the doors with an oil base stain and then painting over it with a normal paint and once dry rubbing the edges and crevices with steel wool but it doesn't achieve the desired outcome.

It sounds like what you tried was more what I would call a distressed finish. Before anyone can advise how to achieve a look we need to see an example of something similiar to that which you are trying to create. There are hundreds of different finishes.

If my understanding of what you mean by patina is correct it can be created by overlaying dark water based wood stain onto light oil based woodstain and rubbing back while still wet - then clear topcoating - but that is just one way to do it.

Dasha, this is probably not what you had in mind... but I have just done some with a suede effect paint covered by a clear acrylic and then a coat of poly on the top.

More of a texture finish but there is also a mottled colouration.
