    Default concrete for fence posts

    HI everyone,

I'm building a 30m paling fence and am wondering if its worth while using anything other than 20kg bags of instant concrete to set the posts. I figure I'll need close to 2 bags a post and each bag is $6.

Would it be any cheaper to mix it myself? porbably not worth the hassle?

Also while im on the subject the holes for the posts are 600mm deep and about a spade width square. Are these big enough for c section steel posts?

    Thanks

Making a few guesses here but I figure you may need say 0.4 of a cubic Meter. 16 posts x .6 deep x .2x.2. That could be bought from a mini-mix company.

That hole size does'nt give you much room to maneuver.

To mix it yourself, at a minimum get .5 CuM of premix and 2 or 3 bags of cement.

If you are digging by hand, the holes always finish up bigger than that.

Size of the foundation depends on on a few things, main thing is do you have to comply with any regs? If not and the fence is not too high they seem OK at 600 deep.
    cheers

thanks billbee, I ended up using instant concrete in bags.

Another quick question... I'm planning on using 50mm galvanised flat head nails to attach the palings to the rails. I reckon 50mm is necessary for the overlapping palings which need to go through 2 palings and into the rail. does that sound ok?

    cheers

yep 50mm is the standard size for nailing pailings .. oh and make sure the pailings overlap at least 15mm either side, preferably 20mm.. as in time they will shrink a bit and if not overlapped properly will show gaps .....
