"Best finish" really depends on what you like - glossy, semi-glossy, matt, and that's the appearance factor; also your circumstances - hardness of finish, drying time, are you concerned about smell, ease of repairing scratches, etc.
A popular finish for indoor timber floors is polyurethane varnish (numerous brands), which is available in various levels of glossiness. Takes longer to dry & most will smell for a few weeks.
An alternative is water-based varnish (Cabots) - dries super quick and no smell but the "satin" finish ends quite fairly glossy; main downside is it's more expensive.
Plus other finishes.
Suggest you go to Bunnings or paintshop and look at their sample woodpieces / brochures.
