    Default Building costs

    G'day all,

I did a search but didn't find what I wanted (I did get sidetracked into reading a very interesting thread about architects - 6 pages - how often does this happen!!)

What's the rough cost (per square or per square metre) of building a house in Canberra?

    Thanks,
    Adam

Well you know, it's a very variable thing. There are some here who believe quoting any figure is meaningless without knowing what you want to build and what the block looks like and so on.

The most common figure I hear bandied about is about $12k - $14k per rhombus. As a very rough rule of thumb, it seems to work out OK.

    SilentC,
    That'll do nicely.
    Thanks,
    Adam
PS. I think the way our current house is built it would probably qualify for a rhomboid in anyone's language!

That must be an imperial Rhombus ! lol
There actually published tables of costings per sq mtre somewhere - possibly the HIA site.

Part of the building course I'm doing has a Costing and Estimation unit - but l've forgotten everything except that a multistory core filled block house with cast panel floors is only 70% the cost per mtre sq of a single storey timber frame house (to lock up). I remember that becuase I was very surprised!

Most insurance companies have calculators on the web that let you estimate replacement costs by entering the various building items and the location. They are sufficient to give a usable estimate.

    For example see

Thanks Bloss, I didn't think about insurance companies.
    I'll check it out.
