Door 40mm wont fit 38mm frame space?

What is the best suggestion to fit a 40mm external door into a single cut jamb & door stop construction? The space allowed for the door thickness is about 38mm but the door is 40mm. The space before paint was about 39-40mm. Should the space be about 42mm for a 40mm door? I can't move stops as they aren't separate.

The original jamb was wrongly mounted with an internal door for an external port. It seems the jamb is ok as the wrong door had forward/inward movement, but I'm concerned that the standard may have changed from 38mm to 40mm. Am I correct?

Should I route & chisel out some mm's on the intergrated jamb/door-stop to get the door to fit? I don't want to replace the door jamb. How much to take out? What's the best method of correcting this problem?

As far as I know at least for the last 30 years anyway all external doors have been 40mm and internal doors have been 35mm.

If you need to remove a couple of mm then if you could get a small router or laminate trimmer and run around the jamb with a guide attached to it, it would reduce the amount of chiseling you would have to do.

Thanks for the reply Barry. I was planning on doing that, routing most and chiseling the corner parts. I'm pretty much a newbie, so wanting to know if this is the best method before starting.
