    Question Floating Floor or Glued?

    Hi all,

Grappling wiht flooring dilema. Looking to do Kitchen/Meals/Hall ~40 sqm.

We were thinking of laminate floors (8mm stuff) but have been talked out of it. Want to spend a "little" extra and get real timber (at least on top)

    So do we:

    1- Floating or glue down?

2 -Engineered timber or solid timber ?

    Benefits/disadvantages??

    Sub floor is:
    - old floor boards (kitchen)
    - concrete slab (meals), Needs prep - above boards (3-7mm), not level
    - old boards (hall)

Trying to do it for under $100/sqm or abouts.

The prep may be extra. I have done some floor prep before and would be willing to pay someone to do this, but who do you call??

    Cheers
Paul (still in need of a new day job - but could just keep on reno-ing)

Lay 15mm ply over the entire area to be covered and install 19mm thick t/g on top of the ply. This will give you the best results in your case. You can install the ply yourself, and even install the t/g, but get a pro to sand it. If you do most of the work yourself , you should get out of it at close to $100/m2
    $64 per m2 for timber
    $20.00 per m2 for ply
$25.00 per m2 to sand and coat
Pluss $100.00 for glue and spikes and sundry items.

    Thanks Larry.

One point I did not mention was that the area abutts living room where eventually we want to polish up exisitng boards. So 15mm ply + 19mm boards will give me a 35 mm step. That is why we are looking at floating (2mm underlay ~ 14 mm boards).
