Staining / finishing Vic Ash wardrobes
I've installed Vic Ash wardrobes in our master bedroom.
I try really hard, but often stuff the finishing up - I'm a study in 'learn from your mistakes'.
I understand the combined stain / varnish products are problematic...
We like the lighter Vic Ash color, so will go with a light stain.
Which product(s) would you recommend?
And what is 'traditional' for this type of timber wardrobe - matt, stain or gloss?
Cheers,
TB

Gidday Tiger,
if you like the lighter Vic Ash - why stain at all?
If you must, however, I would personally just head on over to the nearest bunnings and coax someone there into letting you wipe on a few test stains onto a sample of vic ash to see which comes out - given the variation in possibilities, it's a little hard to say what might turn out best for your particular household. On the "sample wall" you should always note the types of wood they have used, since it won't be representative of the stain on the wood you are trying to use.
Personally I prefer a satin finish on interior furniture like wardrobes.

No - I won't bill you for reading this.

I've made a number of pieces of furniture using Vic Ash, including 3 beds. In the early days I gave then a light stain followed by danish oil, however latterly I've not stained at all and used wipe on poly (you can get it from bunnings). Must say that I prefer the natural, and wipe on poly is very easy to use and give an excellent finish. I prefer the satin finish.
