Completed Retaining Wall

Hi All,
We have recently completed building two retaining walls so I am posting a few pics for interest. We used Hanson Terrace block filled with top soil and are now currently planting them out with all sorts. One large area is full of strawberries and another section is the "herb garden". The space between the two walls is slowly filling up with small shrubs (lavender, rosemary, etc) and ground cover.

NICE!!! If I may ask, how much do the blocks cost and any names of suppliers (would you happen to know for Melbourne)? I need to do up a retaining wall in my backyard.

I am not too sure how much the blocks would be now, I bought 9 pallets each of 90 blocks nearly two years ago for under $2k. These particular blocks are produced by Hanson Building products and I am sure they have a place somewhere around Melbourne. Have a look at http://www.hansonbp.biz.

i am in planning phase at the moment, will checkout Hanson too, before i was only focusing on Boral products.

nicely done, they are easy walls to build, just have to make sure the first layer is 110% spot on.

Hi, Did you fill the blocks with rubble or soil or what.I have a small wall to build and they definitly look ok to me.

Hi Fred,
Yeah, I filled the blocks with top soil. Hanson reckon that you can have up to 200mm space between blocks, but I reckoned that this was a bit too much, so I left 100mm between them. It makes for much easier planting in the pockets formed, but the top soil tends to run out into the lower blocks so I used some 150 mm plastic garden edging, cut into 95 mm strips and laid across the gap between the two lower blocks before filling the blocks in the next course up with the top soil.
I put 150mm of gravel behind the blocks on top of ag pipe and then backfilled behind the gravel. I found the easiest way to do this was to lay a course of blocks, put in boards at 150mm behind that course, fill between the block and boards with gravel, backfill behind the boards, then pull the boards out and compact the backfill.
