    Question bearer and joists

    Hi
I have a question on 100mm Cee section used for bearers and Joists
My question is, I am building a deck off the ground and was wondering what is the maximum distance between the bearers that I can go?
I am fixing the joists at 450 centers and will be using cypress decking.
There maybe a roof being fitted in the next 12 to 18 months.
Also the size of the deck is 10m x 10m. Sorry it isn't all woodwork but I hope you can overlook that to help me out.

    Hi Brynk

Now you got me, I'm not sure i think maybe it is Cold-Drawn but I am not certain, I do know it is 1.5mm Galvanized but the other I am just guessing.
    Thanks for your help

If it's 1.5 then it's cold-formed. I would check out strammit to see whether they have some span tables.

I see in the linked website from Pulse there is advice regarding the metal ringing sound when walking on a timber deck supported by a metal sub-structure.

I'm looking to build a deck and will use metal under, however the other week I saw the joists covered with a layer of rubber. This wasn't C section however, you could always replicate if prepared to spend the time cutting and fixing a rubber strip on top of the metal prior to fixing the timber decking. I could only assume this would alleviate the noise.

    cheers.
    Dave
