cypress handrail posts?
i require 4 handrail psts for my deck so i went to buggs bunning. my regular timber suplier only could offer some red gum post that i would need to get dressed (posible last resort) anyway bunnies had cypress posts and was wondering how thay would go in the wether? i would be giving them a coat of decking oil twice a year, just wondering if they were suitable for outside. the outher option they had was laminated merbau posts. not really keen on the laminating as i dont want it popping open in 10 years time. anyone know of a solid merbau post suplies (100x100 or bigger) in geelong or melbourne?
Thanks for your help

Nothing wrong with Cypress, even in the ground. BUT... as a post, if you dont attach something to it, like the hand rail, it will twist.

Gooday,
I'e got 30metre laong verandahs on both sides of my house = North and South facing. All the posts, handrails and even the decks are cypress and we live only 400 metres from the ocean. No problems. I do agree that it needs to be nailed or fastened in some way or it will warp/twist and it isn't real good for re-working as it tends to crack/split, but as far as exterior use is concerned mine has been outside for 15 years with no problems.
cheers......Paul.
