G'day strangers.

I HOPE THAT WHOEVER INVENTED LATH AND PLASTER IS ROTTING IN HELL SURROUNDED BY JOHN HOWARD LOOK-A-LIKES.......

The bathroom reno is going to be the death of me. The whole reno was budgeted at around 70k. We're up to about 150k and still not finished. Never again!!!!

Lath and plaster is an old-fashioned plastering technique. Slats of wood (laths) are applied horizontally around the room, and plaster trowelled over the top. It was replaced by sheet plaster, like the horsehair stuff, which then got replaced by modern plasterboard.

Know what you mean about the old plaster, can't you just Gyprock/FRC sheet over it and pretend it was never there?

Lath (no 'e' - that's for woodturners) and plaster (which is really cement, lime and water mud) was used in houses built prior to about 1960. Thankfully its a dead trade. I'll be pooping concrete pipes for a month. The problem is that the fools who we bought the dump off decided to liquid nail crapiata v groove over the walls. Of course removing said crapiata has proven a dang trial (to use forum permitted words) as it left dirty great holes in the old plaster. Then I discovered that the old studs resembled splintery licorice so I had to pack them out with new studs. Then I pulled the false ceiling down and was horrified to discover every colour of mould known to man because the flashy IXL Tastic was venting into a closed space. Under the panelling was the following: This bathroom was renovated by John and Rick, Feb 4 2004. Well, if you're out there John and Rick you must be the original Dodgey Bros because my 8 month old GG Daughter could have done better with newspaper and dribble. The I pulled up the 3 year old floor tiles and found they had been laid over masonite, been poorly grouted and so of the wooden floorboards and some joists and parts of a bearer were rotten. Had to put a new floor in.....I hate this dump....

Rant off.

PS the 150K is for the whole job. prolly another 6k will see the end of it. We'll have to live to 123 years old to realise the value....and to make it worse SWMBO - who's still hangin around - doesn't appreciate it all.....sigh....deeper sigh...

It ain't easy doing additions. You should of got the house cheap to make up for the reno. I don't know how you worked out the cost before you had a look see.

LOL Sheddie, I know your frustration. I'm careful these days about so called renovated houses - they are often paint and tart up jobs done in a few weeks by ppl who dont care what happens in a few years.

Anyway just keep at it - its almost over

I copped a bit of flak from friends for buying a 'renovators delight', but it was visual and honest. No tart up had been done, and as bad as it looked was the worst it was. Lucky for us I suppose?

Which probably goes to explain why our thrice redecorated bathroom was totally demolished down to dirt level for its fourth 'renovation'. Renovation three, dating from the late 70's, was a comprehensive failure in terms of improving building longevity!!

No mate. The budget for the original reno was 70k. We added about 40m2 to the existing pile of kindling and 63m2 of deck. a new roof on the old house, shadow clad ply on the old house replace the old double hung sash windows with new aluminium and 6.3mm comfort glass (Pilkington ACI) and a lick of paint. The bathroom is the last structural bit of the reno and its been the toughest (apart from our ruined marriage).
