bathroom reno procedure

Hi there,

I've been trying to figure out the order in which to renovate my en suite, but just a little unclear about a few things. Here's my proposed method.

1) Remove existing stuff (almost done)

- How much of the old surface needs to be cleaned/removed before tiling or waterproofing can take place?
I have used a paint scraper and hammer to chisel off as much of the old thinset as possible. Will this surface be enough to tile back over?

- Do i need to clean off all of the mortar from under the old shower pan?
I can get most of it off with a bolster/hammer & crow bar, but the surface isn't "clean". Does it need to be completely clean before waterproofing?

2) That strange hole.
When removing the old fibreglass showerpan, i found that square hole in the slab (see picture).
- What is that hole for?
I assume i need to raise the waste pipe, and fill that hole with concrete, level to the rest of the slab.

3) Walls
- I tore down the shower walls which had tiles on them, and need to install new ones.
- What type of sheeting/wall is recommended for use in a shower?
- Should i leave a gap at the bottom between the slab and the bottom of the sheet?
- I will likely get a plasterer in to fix up the trickier bits (cornering, joins, etc)

4) Hebel block for shower curb
- I've been told this is what's used for shower curb, and that i can cut it to size and liquid nails it to the cement.?

5) Waterproofing
- I plan on getting a professional waterproofer in to do this, just need to make sure the surface is ready for him/her. (see 1)
- Does the waterproofing go directly onto the slab and around the curb/walls??

6) Tiling..
- Getting a professional tiler to do this.
- Does the tiler pack a base on top of the waterproofing, then tile straight onto that?

OWW Hopoz - too many questions!! And most of the answers can be found in similiar threads.

Basically get the existing floor and floor and walls as smooth as possible - angle grind if necessary. Remove any loose or torn waterproof membrane.

The square hole in the floor was to fit the outlet under the old shower base - most prefab showerbases need a cut out hole in the floor. It can be filled level but get the waste pipe extended first.

Reline walls with Villaboard - leave a 6 - 10 mm gap between boards and floor - fill with polyurethane sealant - make a nice clean line - use tape.

Hebel block is good - use landscape grade Liquid nails or special hebel glue. There are a mob of granite bench top ppl here on sun coast that will shape a hebel slab to the exact size and ramping for a shower base for $200 complete with hob - tilers love it so easy peasy! Might be someone near you that will do it - or do it yourself if you feel artistic.

The waterproofer will cover everything that needs waterproofing - which is probaly everywhere, and the tiler will put his scree down and tile on top
