Protecting stumps
Sorry about this - I've got another dilemma I need to sort out. My partner works long hours and doesn't have time to do all the research, so I'm left to be the one looking like a dill.
Anyway, as demonstrated by the attached (very badly drawn) diagram, we have paved a path along the front of our deck, and I am wondering what we can put in between the stumps and the paving so as to avoid damage to the stumps by moisture (if this is an issue), and also in such a way that will not invite termites.
I hope the diagram adequately displays what I'm trying to say - basically, the block slopes and we wanted a path right in front of the deck. The smart thing to do may well have been to excavate rather than build up in front of the deck. It should, be noted that being a woman, my opinion is never listened to until it's too late, or I have proof from this forum. This was evidenced this past weekend when my partner took to the front yard with a rotary hoe without first wetting the soil. The dust storm created was unbelievable!
Anyway, I really hope some of you guys can give me some insight....
Cheers,
Lotte

I would put a drain in between the lawn and the paving, if you can, or else between the pavers and the stumps. This will divert the water running down the slope of the lawn.
Next you could pack some blue metal around the stumps, this would allow the water to drain away.
The danger with water is when it sits around the stumps for long periods, so if you can encourage it to drain away, the stumps should be fine.
