Default Price per square metre of deck

I know that there are many variables, but does anyone have a ball park figure of a priice per square metres of deck. Including decking, joists, bearers etc.

My MIL is wanting a deck and I want to give her an idea of how much it will cost per suqare metre, without having to sit down and do the calculations. That way she can figure out how much she can afford, and I can then work from there as to how big.

This is as rough as guts, but I *think* I was told about $150 a square metre.

It works out about right for my deck, but I did it myself, and used Jarrah decking boards.

    Cheers

    Jayson.

Doin it yourself expect to pay $45sqm for 90x19 Merbau decking and you can probably add another $45sqm for all the other bits and pieces your going to need ie Posts, Bearers, Joists, Screws, nails. And then the hardest thing....finding the time to do it.

The $190/sq.m is a good charge out rate, If your doing it yourself it will cost you between $70 - $90/sq.m.

Don't forget to add a bit to the cost so you can purchase that new tool that is absolutely essential to finish the job

THe MIL has promised me a new tool, maybe a nail gun. Every job I do at home I factor a new toy/tool, to see if I am going to come out in front

In a grumpy mood today so bear with me.

I think your being a bit lazy. It takes bugger all to figure out the cost of a deck, and you have been that ambiguous that pricing it (ball park or not) becomes very problematic.

    A timber deck? Reconstituted timber?

    Steel sub floor? Timber?

How high is the deck off the ground? 300mm or 3m?

    Steps?

    Balustrading?

So once you've detailed the type of deck it is going to be, you then look at the size of the deck. A smaller deck, will most likely work out dearer per sqm than a larger deck. Steps, balustrading, demolition on existing site all are add-on costs.

Then when, you've decided the style and size of the deck, it doesn't take much to figure out what materials you need.

    Stumps.
    Concrete.
    Bearers.
    Joists.
    Fixing for Bearers and Joists.
    Ant caps.
    Decking.
    Fixing for Decking.
    Finish.

Pricing those will take one 5 minute phone call. And then your done. Easy as pie.

    And then one day
    He faded away
    Because he overused White

I realise I was being ambiguous. And no I wasn't being lazy.

The MIL has a small yard, about 10 x 6 m and wants "a deck" She just can't decide on the size. Her last idea was 4 x 5. But it has varied about as much as teh Melbourne weather the last month. So I wasn't prepared to sit down and calcualte spans, joists, bearers etc to only hear that, "I think maybe if i ...." to then have to start again.

Although there are a lot of variables, decks up to maybe 1.5 m high would still have a similar price per sqm. (excluding stairs balustrades and the like.) The cost of the longer posts only represents a small increase in overall percentage. The deck I was after is no more than a metre at the highest point. I was after a rough figure so that her 4x5 = 20 sqm or roughly $..... so she would have an idea of what she could afford.

Once you get over this height other issues come into play. Eg bracing. Do you want a clear area underneath, therefore bigger spans joists etc.
